The Cancer Center at Denton Regional Opens Final Phase of Center
Denton, TX (April 22, 2008) - The Cancer Center at Denton Regional takes great pleasure in announcing the opening of the final phase of the Center. The addition of The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Denton Regional means that the hospital can now offer complete and comprehensive oncology services for the people of Denton and surrounding counties, all in one location. These services include medical oncology (chemo), radiation oncology, comprehensive diagnostic imaging and breast diagnostics, inpatient surgical services and integrated nutrition, education, and cancer rehabilitation.
What makes The Cancer Center at Denton Regional unique is the combination of services available on one campus. As a patient goes through their course of treatment, they are able to access this continuum of care and all on one campus.
The Cancer Center at Denton Regional is accredited by Joint Commission and the American College of Surgeons (ACOS) Commission on Cancer, and lead by board-certified Radiation Oncologists, Medical Oncologists, Radiologists, Surgeons, and a fellowship-trained Breast Radiologist. With the addition of Denton Regional Radiation Oncology and The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Denton Regional, inpatients and outpatients can easily access all aspects of cancer care in one location, close to home.
Caleb O’Rear, CEO said, “The Cancer Center at Denton Regional will be a single-source cancer care resource equipped with the most advanced technology and headed by physicians with credentials from leading cancer centers.”Surgical options are available either through Denton Regional Medical Center or the Day Surgery Center at Denton Regional, as well as inpatient oncology and nutrition counseling. Advanced outpatient diagnostic services such as CT, PET/CT, MRI, and Nuclear Imaging are available through the Mayhill Diagnostic Center at Denton Regional. Other outpatient services such as cancer rehabilitation and lymphedema therapy are also available.
Phase I was the opening of Denton Regional Radiation Oncology in 2007, headed by Matthew L. Cavey, MD, DABR, a Board Certified Radiation Oncologist. Denton Regional Radiation Oncology is the first and only facility in Denton County to offer cancer patients use of the state-of-the-art technology, Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) with On-Board Imaging. This sophisticated imaging technology is used to guide the delivery of precise forms of radiation therapy. Knowing exactly where the tumor is allows clinicians to reduce the volume of tissue irradiated, targeting only the tumor and sparing the surrounding normal tissue. Irradiating less normal tissue reduces the toxicity of radiotherapy, improving the patient’s quality of life, and may make it possible to deliver higher radiation doses to the tumor and thereby increase the likelihood of local tumor control.
Other external beam radiation therapy services provided at the center include Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy, and Stereotactic Radiosurgery. Additionally, High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy for treatments such as MammoSite (partial breast radiation) and prostate interstitial implants, is available within the dedicated Brachytherapy Suite.
Phase II of the project consisted of the addition of The Center of Cancer and Blood Disorders at Denton Regional. Headed by Gus Gonzalez, MD, services include medical oncology and hematology. The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders will be located in the Denton Regional Professional Office Building, directly across the hall from Denton Regional Radiation Oncology. It is affiliated with The Center of Cancer and Blood Disorders of Fort Worth and patients have the availability of clinical trial participation, with access to drugs and regimens at the earliest possible stage of development.
