New Endovascular Suite Means Less Invasive Treatments for Patients

Procedure provides hope for some of the area’s sickest patients

Denton Regional’s Endovascular Suite is first in Denton County.

Denton Regional Medical Center recently opened a new two million-dollar Endovascular Suite.  Located within one of the operating rooms, this suite is the first of its kind in Denton County and one of only three in the Metroplex.

The Endovascular Suite is equipped with a digital imaging system that produces high resolution, real-time images during procedures that require extreme precision.   The GE Innova® 4100 system provides high quality fluoroscopic imaging in a sterile environment where both open and minimally invasive techniques can be performed.   The suite is also equipped with other state of the art technologies such as intravascular ultrasonography (IVUS), and the Silverhawk peripheral vascular plaque excision system.

“Our ability to see vascular anatomy more clearly while guiding catheters, stents and other medical devices during minimally invasive procedures is critical. Our new endosuite provides high quality imaging with decreased radiation exposure and decreased intravenous contrast requirements - all of this within a sterile environment.  This novel arrangement allows us to combine minimally invasive procedures, such as balloon angioplasty, stenting, atherectomy, embolization and thrombolysis with conventional open vascular interventions. We are now able to safely perform complex vascular surgical interventions, including thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysm endovascular repairs and carotid artery angioplasty and stenting”
Carlos P. Cruz, MD, Vascular Surgeon

Major benefits include the ability of the physician to see small blood vessels with greater clarity, even in larger patients who are generally more difficult to image.  Moreover, because physicians can image more anatomy in a single series, a complete image study requires fewer X-ray images, decreased radiation exposure and a lower dose of contrast as compared to conventional systems.

Minimally invasive (endovascular) techniques provide numerous patient benefits, including: smaller incisions, faster recovery, decreased post-operative pain, and often, lower procedure expense.

While physicians can perform minimally invasive procedures with high quality imaging, the sterile environment and full anesthesia capabilities of the Endovascular Suite allow physicians to perform open vascular surgical procedures as well.  Minimally invasive procedures can be performed in combination with open vascular procedures, or minimally invasive procedures can be converted to open procedures without the need to subject the patient to two separate operations.
